From Trees to Cityscapes Gavin’s work is sensitive and detailed, there is an obsession with the power of observation and finding a truth through realism. With influences as diverse as Giovanni Caneletto, Vilhelm Hammershoi and Clive Head. Gavin’s work explores the visual world often moving between subject matters and creative media as he researches artistic process to investigate themes of light, space and experience. Recently Gavin has sought subject matter that was closer to home and began painting from his kitchen cupboards. With these still life’s he took inspiration from William York MacGregor’s painting the “Vegetable Stall”. With a shallow depth of field, white space and painterly realist manner he aims to create a feeling of simple almost minimalist elegance.
Gavin lives and works in Glasgow. He graduated from Brighton University with a degree in Fine Art, Drawing & Painting, before graduating from Strathclyde University with his PGCE in Teacher Training. He divides his time between being a professional artist and teaching art. He works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking and lens based.
Gavin exhibits often and regularly works to commission. He has produced a number of artworks for a variety of private commissions, including businesses and is in private collections worldwide including UK, Europe, Australia, Canada and the US.
