Walter now works as an artist, producing figurative studies in both clay and paint. Sculptural pieces are usually produced in limited edition, using slip-casting techniques. These figures, varying from a few inches in height to life size, are glazed using raku fired glazes or stoneware bronze-like glazes. Paintings are oil on canvas, a favourite subject being the “draped nude” where figure studies are combined with carefully observed fabrics. In sculpture he likes to leave the mark of the finger in the clay and in paint leaves a fairly painterly brushstroke, in both instances showing the making process while at the same time producing a faithful realism1971Graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in Furniture Design and Sculpture1972 Certificate in Secondary Education at Moray House CollegeTeaching Experience:Lornshill Academy, Alloa High School of Stirling Falkirk College of Technology Developed SCOTVEC national certificate courses in Art and Design Worked as an Examiner, Marker, Subject Assessor and Verifier 1985Set up workshop in Alloa producing wheel-thrown functional stoneware, Raku fired ware and figurative sculptureDesigned and built a wood-fired kiln.1986Gained work experience in production throwing at Cauldair Pottery, Laggan Bridge1991Resigned from teaching to concentrate on artwork.Developed work in slip-cast figurative sculpture. Now works as a sculptor and painter.2002Taught sculpting, mould making and slip-casting in West Virginia, USAEXHIBITIONS AT:THE ATHOLL GALLERY, DUNKELDTHE BROUGHTON GALLERYTHE SMITH GALLERY, STIRLINGTHE GATEHOUSE GALLERY, ROUKEN GLENTHE ABERFELDY GALLERYTHE GALLERY HEINZEL, ABERDEENTHE ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY, EDINBURGHTHE ROYAL GLASGOW INSTITUTETHE CATTO GALLERY, LONDONTHE ROOKSMOOR GALLERY, BATHTHE PYRAMID GALLERY, YORKWILLIAM SISSONS GALLERY, HELMSLEYTHE MIDLAND TRAIL GALLERY, WEST VIRGINIA, USATHE GLASGOW ART FAIRTHE AFFORDABLE ART FAIR, CHELSEACRISTIAN CLOOTS, BRUSSELLSALESSANDRO STUDIOS, BROUGHTY FERRYTHE CHURCH STREET GALLERY, CROMERTHE IONA HOUSE GALLERY, WOODSTOCKTHE MORNINGSIDE GALLERY, EDINBURGHTHE STRATHEARN GALLERY, CRIEFFTHE TALLENTYRE GALLERY, MORPETHWinner of the SPA Alastair Dunn Award 1990Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists and Artist CraftsmenPaintings in the Collection of Lord DouneCeramic Mural, Alloa Town CentreCentrepiece of historical exhibition, Abbott’s House, DunfermlineClackmannanshire Arts Forum award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts 2007
