Stephen Smith is a landscape artist from the West of Scotland. His work ranges from beautifully lit winter landscapes to more textural abstract works, both of which perfectly capture the peaceful Scottish countryside. We are delighted to offer free worldwide delivery on his paintings.

"Stephen Smith's landscapes capture a wonderful sense of fleeting light that is distinctly Scottish" Tally, Gallery Assistant.

Customers will often remark on the exquisite textural qualities of Smith's work.

From the Artist

Stephen Smith studied fine art at the Glasgow School of Art, where he specialised in sculpture, and graduated in 1992. After graduating he went on to work as an artist in residence, including for the Kilpatrick Project and the Drumchapel Initiative, he also exhibited in annual exhibitions including Project Ability – RGI, Callendar Park – Falkirk, Kildrummy Castle – Aberdeenshire.

In 1995 Stephen embarked on a teaching career as a secondary school teacher in the West of Scotland. During his time teaching, Stephen has continued to produce his own artwork but has moved away from sculpture and more towards the medium of painting (his first love prior to art school). He has exhibited and sold his work in several group exhibitions, as well as, receiving commissions. These exhibitions have included, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow Botanical Gardens, the Paisley Art Institute’s Annual Exhibition, the Art Forum Milngavie, RGI, joint artist exhibition at New Glasgow Society and Scotland Art Gallery.

Stephen continues to teach and is currently the principal teacher of art and design at Boclair Academy in Bearsden. As his children are all now young adults, Stephen has found himself with greater free time and fresh inspiration to pick up the paint brush and immerse himself in his painting.

Stephen’s work is primarily concerned with light and the impact it has on the landscape. He aims to create atmosphere in his work through colour, mark making, texture and composition. He will sketch outdoors and take photographs for reference, before returning to his studio to paint. He uses mixed media but mainly acrylic and oil.
