I am interested in how events, places and people form our experiences and shape who we are as people. Memories and symbols arise from how we perceive the world around us. I tend to work in two ways. Firstly, I try to capture images in my life – the places, people and objects I come across. The resulting paintings tend to be simpler and more representative but I see them as a ‘freeze-frame’ of my experience. Secondly, I attempt to interweave these images into the backgrounds and fabrics of my paintings to bring a richness and depth into the images and to develop a story. I combine memories (my own and those of others) with imagined situations and draw from a personal inventory of symbolic images. Thus the composition evolves. My subject matter is essentially personal so my intention is not to tell these stories directly, but to try and engage the attention of the viewers and to accept their own interpretations. The patchwork paintings also explore ideas of personhood. Everyone has their own story. As we make decisions and choices in life, we sew together a patchwork of experiences and memories which make us who we are. The patterns and sequences of patches that we have sewn, influence new decisions in life and our relationships with others. The process is continual. Our direction in life transacts with the person who we are.
