selected artist: Fraser Douglas
Curriculum Vitae Biography:
I was born in Dunfermline, Fife, in 1979 and spent my formative years in the nearby commuter town of Kinross in Perthshire where I developed a keen interest in art. On completion of high school I was accepted to continue my studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. I specialized in Drawing and Painting and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in 2002. I have since maintained a studio and try to immerse myself in creative environments as much as possible, now living and working in Edinburgh.
Qualifications:
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, University of Dundee, 13 Perth Rd, Dundee 1998-2002 BA Honours - Fine Art, Drawing and Painting
During the course of my degree studies I accumulated a wealth of knowledge in Fine Art history, theory and practices. I am proficient in drawing and painting techniques and I also have an extensive technical knowledge of other artistic mediums. Throughout my undergraduate studies I enjoyed the challenge of conveying ideas and information about the visual arts to others through the development of effective interpersonal and communications skills, report writing, visual interpretation and presentation.
Practice:
Working predominantly in Oil on Canvas using a varied palette, I mainly concentrate on portraiture and figurative subjects. I like to experiment with the visual effects of strong tonal contrasts combined with dynamic compositions, using light and shade generously. I use this technique not only as a compositional device but also to emphasize tension and drama within the painting. My work is an attempt to combine the realistic depiction of a photograph with compositional elements derived from both classical and abstract influences alongside traditional painting techniques. Influenced by the work of artists such as the contemporary photo-realists’, Chuck Close and Gerhard Richter to the Baroque and Old Masters, such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt.
