William McLean Kerr was born in Fife and moved to Ayrshire in 1966. He studied art at Jacob Kramer School of Art in Leeds and graphic design at Manchester Polytechnic.

His career includes six years as a graphic designer with Central Television in the Midlands where he worked on three series of the award winning Spitting Image and several years running a graphic design consultancy in Glasgow.

William has been painting for over 45 years and finally achieved his life time ambition when he began working as a professional artist in 1996. Since then he has received many private and corporate commissions and in 2006 he was commissioned by the three Ayrshire councils to paint a portrait of the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Major Sir Richard Henderson, as a retirement present. This was followed in 2008 by East Ayrshire Council commissioning him to paint Dumfries House near
Cumnock as a 60th birthday present for HRH Prince Charles.

The magnificent Scottish coastline, with its boats, harbours and ever changing sea and sky, is a great source of inspiration for William and he particularly enjoys capturing the contrast between bright evening skies and the strong, dark shadows and silhouettes the light creates. He paints in a fairly tight realistic style but this is continually developing and evidence of this can be seen in his more recent work. Although most of his work is in oil he also produces pen and ink drawings as he enjoys the contrast between working in these two media.

A number of his paintings and drawings have been published as fine art prints and greeting cards by international publishers and some of his work featuring black and white musical instruments was bought by the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

His work is held in public and private collections as far afield as the USA and Australia and his original paintings and prints can also be found in numerous galleries throughout Scotland.

William is very happy to take on commissioned work and further details can be obtained from scotlandart.com gallery.
