Artist Statement

I create images of the urban built environment, focusing on the complex perspectives that are created by the architecture and city planning; I am fascinated by the volumes of space and how humanity fits into these unnatural massive scales.

I seek to capture the juxtaposition of ideas that the built environment encapsulates, sometimes architecturally arbitrary, at others intentionally harmonious, Scottish cities are exciting visual experiences.

I strive to create realism; I believe that an intensive realist approach is necessary to focus attention equally on the immense manmade structures and minuscule detail. I want to show the drama of these spaces in my painting; the changing complex conditions of nature, weather and light that affects our perception of built environment and make it new, unexpected, fresh and exciting, I seek to remind myself and others of the aesthetic value of these spaces so influential.

I choose this subject matter because the built environment is a vivid record of history as well as it holds our visions of the future and because these spaces hold such strong personal meaning for those who live in them.

Growing up and travelling around North America, I was immediately drawn to works by American realist tradition artists such as Richard Estes, John Salt, Robert Bechtle and Edward Hopper, their work captures the transience of time and place. I feel these artists have a visual language that is direct as well as honest which makes their painting simultaneously nostalgic but timeless and life affirming.

The urban landscape for me is a powerful subject matter, as it is a universally shared environment; a visually rich subject matter, full of symbolism, metaphor, analogies, narratives the mundane and the spiritual

Artist Biography

Gavin lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. He divides his time between being a professional artist and teaching art and design in secondary education. He works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking and lens based media.

He enjoys cooking, travelling, music and outdoor sports; such as cycling, archery and hillwalking. He lives with his wife, artist Audrey Elizabeth Weir and their to two beautiful daughters Isla, born in 2013 and Aoife born in 2015.

Background

Gavin is the 4th out of 5 children born to Glaswegian parents Alex & Jean. He was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada. His father was a high pressure welder and his mother was an auxiliary nurse. The family travelled were the work was, living in a number of places in North America before returning to the UK when Gavin was 12. They first settled in Glasgow before continuing to travel, living in various parts of the UK. Whilst the family were living in Bournemouth tragedy struck when Gavin’s father passed away suddenly.

Gavin loved art and it was always his dream to go to art school but growing up with dyslexia in the 70s and 80s he thought a university education wasn’t an option for him. He left school and was taken on as a trainee chef. During this time he realised he shouldn’t let anything prevent him from achieving his goals. He studied part time to gain the qualifications he needed for university. He then studied for his HND in Art & Design before moving to Brighton to complete his BA (hons) in Fine Art, Drawing & Painting.

In 1997, the summer he graduated he moved back up to Glasgow. By the end of his first month in the city he met his wife, whilst volunteering in a visual arts outreach project. Over the next few years he split his time between working as an artist and running visual art community education programmes. He finally came to terms with his dyslexia by completing his post graduate in teacher training at Strathclyde University in 2003. He has taught Art and Design in Secondary education full time alongside his studio practise ever since.

Since 2007 Gavin has been committed to painting his highly realist landscapes, inspired by the Scottish environment and architecture. Gavin showcased his new direction in 2012 when he had his first solo exhibition since he began teaching. The exhibition was a great success, with very positive reviews.
