'I grew up in Botswana and was fascinated by women making art and being creative. I drew patterns in the earth as a child and now I make marks on canvas to create texture and pattern. My Italian mother also influenced me with her decorative style and love of the ornate'.

Gio Martin is a visual artist now living and working in the south coast of the UK. A desire to be near the sea and her family brought her from Scotland where she lived and practiced as an artist for twenty years.

She initially trained in ceramics and design and set up a workshop in Stirlingshire where she produced figurative ceramics for many years, but since 2015 she has painted on canvas. Her paintings are inspired by street art, ceramics, sculpture, also artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Basquiat.

Fascinated by layers and texture she often paints over and over work revealing layers and textures of past paintings. Her childhood spent in Botswana also influences her paintings, the flora and fauna, fabrics, pots and sculptures of Southern Africa seep into her colourful paintings.

Gio has exhibited in many galleries, including:

  • The Velvet Easel Gallery, Edinburgh
  • The Green Gallery, Buchlyvie
  • ArtisanAnd Gallery, Aberfeldy
  • The Strathearn Gallery, Crieff
  • The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle
  • The Jelly Gallery, Reading

And many more. Her work is in many private collections all over the world.

I am interested in nature as well as people, so natural elements like dragonflies, butterflies, flowers, and birds are often in the gouache work which I like to see as visual poems.

A lot of my figures are whimsical with the figures often looking off to the distance remembering dreams and old memories.'
