Elaine Cunningham graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee in 2002 with a B.A. (HONS) in Fine Art. Her work has been exhibited in private galleries throughout the UK.

"My paintings are based on an emotional response to the sea. It is important to me that I paint where I feel a great affinity. Living all my childhood beside the sea, it is close to my heart and memories play a big part in my work. I strive to achieve the essence of the sea, to distil the image without losing it completely.

I like to look and respond to the ever- changing weather conditions and times of the day that cannot easily be defined. Some of my paintings are meditative and others more stimulating just like the moods of the sea. I feel my work is like painting a portrait, sharing the changing emotions and character of a person. It is only when you look and learn all the changing emotions and character of a person or place that you can make a painting that is interesting and meaningful. I have always imagined that in painting a place, I somehow become part of it, and it of me."

I have lived most of my life near the sea. It is very close to my heart and is a constant influence on my painting. My practice involves both plein air and studio work and I embrace an extensive range of materials and techniques including oil paint, charcoal and watercolour."
