STATEMENT
Graduating with an Honours Degree in Fine art Painting from Glasgow School of Art in 1996,the same year I was awarded the John Kinross Scholarship for painting and study in Tuscany from the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.
Exploring on foot through vineyards and hilltop villages, armed with sketchbooks and paints, observational details filled many sketchbooks and reams of paper and, after winning other travel bursaries(Stoke Roberts 96, Winsor & Newton 96,97)I set off on two industrious and fruitful years of travel and work-in-situ in India, Nepal, Laos and Thailand.
Since returning to England, I have been using my strong source work as reference to produce a series of evocative, richly painted, many layered vibrant Watercolours of people, buildings, animals, where the atmosphere is touching, humorous and unexpected. I have a great affection for capturing everyday life and creating moods with colour.
My work has appeared in several periodicals and books on painting. I have illustrated a book of Haiku poems called Water(written by Chris Mulhern and published by the Acorn book co.).
I have shown my work widely through England, Ireland, France and America.
Now settled with my partner in Saffron Walden, Essex, I am beginning to explore the villages and landscape of England.
